GREAT C-SECTION TIPS AND RECOMMENDATIONS – PART TWO

We highly recommend reading part one first before continuing with information below.

  1. GREAT ACCESSORY ABDOMINAL BINDER
My wife didn’t use one but I wish I knew this was an option. It would have offered me some support for my wife when she needed it badly. This might help you feel more stabilized as your incision and muscles heal.

  2. ICE PACKS AND/OR HOT WATER BOTTLE
Ice packs will help decrease inflammation, swelling and pain. Also, consider using a hot water bottle to increase blood flow and circulation to help with healing.

Insights – Following a c-section, your ability to bend to put down or pick your baby in your cot is almost impossible and incredibly painful.

  3. NUMBNESS IS EXPECTED
It is normal and expected to feel numbness and tingling in your lower abdomen around the incision area. Like any surgery, it will get better with time.

  4. DON’T LIFT HEAVY THINGS
Please take medical doctors, nurses and midwives advice. Do not lift anything heavy. Your baby is the heaviest thing you should be lifting.

Be careful with the weight of your everyday accessories—such as a car seat, pram, nursery furniture like change tables, drawers, baby cots, rocking chairs etc.

  5. CHECK FOR SIGNS OF INFECTION
If you notice any signs of infection, report it to your doctor or treating specialist as soon as possible. Increased pain, swelling, redness, heat, drainage from the incision or fever or chills…

  6. WHEN YOU CAN, START WALKING.
Make sure to take it easy. The more mobile you are, the better you will feel physically and mentally. Again, don’t overdo it.

  7. FEEL FREE TO GRIEVE
Giving birth is a completely selfless act. You may feel some regret about having a c-section, or grieve the “loss” of a vaginal birth. These are normal feelings too. Give yourself grace.

  8. C-SECTION RECOVERY – IT IS A PROCESS
Patience will be required with your recovery. The weight will start to come off right away as the fluid is flushed out of your system. That last bit will stick around for a while, though.

Plus, because of being cut open and healing, it’s going to be harder to work your core and get your abs back in shape. This is beyond your control. If you push it or do things you aren’t supposed to, you will permanently injure yourself. Do approved core exercises.

Remember that it took 9 months to gain the pregnancy weight, so it should take a while to lose it. Again, you had major surgery. Your body went through a lot. Be patient and be kind to yourself.
